Please join me and illustrator Sahle for our Book Launch to launch our new picture book, Patty Dreams, which celebrates the joys of Jamaican Patties. Through storytelling and music, art and discussion, we will get to the story behind the story. After the reading, author Sadé Smith will moderate the conversation with Nadia and Sahle over light refreshments, followed by a book signing. We look forward to an exciting evening as we also acknowledge the 40th anniversary of Toronto’s Patty War. This event will take place at Another Story Bookshop.

PATTY DREAMS IS HERE!

5 years in the baking… a Patty Dream come true.

When I wrote the first draft of this story, one summer night, sitting on the balcony of my childhood home, I envisioned this story bringing my sister laughs.  We used to make songs all the time, pulling them from thin air, bringing words together that felt and sounded right… this was a huge inspiration for this book.

So was the Patty War which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year.  I couldn’t have predicted that my book would come out just before it, but I believe in divine timing so thank you God.

And now, I get to share Patty Dreams with you.

Aside from Music and Media, I’ve planned book launches and tours for each of my titles.  Getting Us to Grandma’s is my tenth book. Partially set in the Bronx in 1980s, I envisioned a themed book bash celebration of my childhood era to celebrate this milestone as well as my other books— my biggest launch ever.

​Book launches are funded by a combination of a few ways. As an author, over the year, I’ve mostly covered the costs of my launches. My publisher is assisting with $200. This year, I learned about the Writers Union Public Readings grant to which I applied to. For the first time, I will receive a presentation fee ($300) for my reading at my launch. This year, I applied to the Toronto Lit Up grant for the second time.  I did not receive it… again. This popular and generous grant receives more applications then available funding. And I’m so happy for the authors, my peers and friends, who have received these funds over the years. As much as I am happy, I know that it could have helped me cover the costs for the big launch I had planned. 

I’m a child of the 1980s and I see this launch of Getting Us to Grandma’s not only as the launch of my new book, but as a celebration of my body of work, inspired by the 1984 road trip my family took from Toronto to the Bronx.  Think 1980s rap and other genres of the era, birthplace of rap and hiphop culture, graffiti, breakdancer, beatbox, etc. If you would like to assist with a donation or gift, however small, I would greatly appreciate it.  You can e-transfer funds to: nadialhohn@gmail.com.  Thank you.

​“School was never been an issue for me.  I always excelled.  I was an honour roll student in high school, got straight As on many report cards in elementary school.  I won the English and Art awards at my Grade 8 graduation.  I was extremely involved in my high school and post-secondary institutions.  I always did extra work and went above and beyond what was required.  I have four degrees (two of them Masters). I embrace the term “nerd”.

I started to fear losing my job over a possible gross negligence (like forgetting about my young students). I feared messing up with my work as an author and presenter.  After some investigations with testing options (low cost, free, paid) and my health insurance coverage and the encouragement from some friends, I decided to get tested.  After nine hours over three sessions, I received my official diagnosis from a clinical psychologist, who also shared my racial and cultural background— severe combined ADHD with high IQ.  I cried.”
