Malaika's Costume S.T.E.A.M. Lesson

You can use Malaika's Costume to teach a Science Technology Engineering Arts Mathematics (S.T.E.A.M.) Lesson.  I will show you how.  Details coming soon.

Science Technology Engineering Arts Math
Plus = Language (English, Writing, Foreign Language)
 
Title: ___Malaika’s Costume Design STEAM 
 
Intended Audience: (Grade level(s), personal interests) _Grade 1-3_______________
 
Summary/Objective:
The purpose of this workshop is to provide students with the opportunity to explore __Writing_(listen to the story “Malaika’s Costume”, connect it with the author’s writing process with their writing process, interview an author)_______________ and __Arts  by __(Carnival headpiece making, singing, dancing to music, seeing examples of Carnival costumes and how it is celebrated throughout the Caribbean)______________________________
 
Students will be able to make a connection between _Writing_______________ (1st STEAM area) and __Arts_______________ (2nd STEAM area), and apply it to _a story that they have heard and had a chance to interact with___________ (real world) by __writing an extension or “fan fiction” piece that extends the story ________________(end product).

Standards:
Visual Arts
1.4 Develop skills and craftsmanship with materials, tools and techniques
 
By the end of grade 2:
 
a. Purposefully experiment with materials and techniques to produce a range of artwork.
 
1.1 Use the creative process to plan, organize and problem solve.
By the end of grade 2:
  1. Use observations and experiences, both spontaneously and deliberately, to plan and create art.
 
2.2 Understand how art has influenced and defined history and culture
By the end of grade 2:
a. Identify and compare art that is used in cultural celebrations.
 
4.3 Make personal connections with visual art
By the end of grade 2:
a. Describe how art enriches people’s lives

Product of learning:  A Carnival costume they design
 
Required Materials (highlight materials not available that need to be purchased):
  • Paper plates
  • Ribbons on spools (different colours)
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Scrap fabric (assorted textures and colours including felt, lace)
  • Sequins
  • Sparkles
  • A child’s silhouette copied onto cardstock or construction paper
Tentative Agenda:
Session 1:  1 hour Read Malaika’s Costume to students.  Students select a theme or topic that were brought up in the story with teacher prompts (e.g., Canada, Caribbean, recycling, grandmother-granddaughter relationships). Look at pictures of different Carnival Costumes and watch videos of kiddie Carnivals.  Discuss what materials are used in the designing of the costumes.
 
Session 2: 1 hour Select a theme.  Design a costume for Carnival using the materials provided on a paperdoll silhouette.

Session 3: 45 minutes Redesign headpiece or redefine.  (Showcase at 12:30).
