The advance copy of my first published picture book, Malaika's Costume, arrived this week. I wrote the story in 2010 as an assignment in a children's book writing class. I entered the manuscript into a Isobel Sissons Canadian Children's Book Award in 2013 and lost. I worked on it in my critique group and re-reads to my students, re-entered the award, and won in 2014. I signed my publishing contract in 2014 with Groundwood Books. The advance copies arrived today in 2015. Malaika's Costume goes on sale in 2016. Pre-order on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Malaikas-Costume-Nadia-L…/…/1554987547, through my publisher's website at http://groundwoodbooks.com/, or in March 2016, support your local bookstore by buying the book there. Read the first Kirkus Review here. (Look out for the sequel, Malaika Smile in Fall 2017.) Praise! Thank you to my publisher Sheila Barry, illustrator Irene Luxbacher, and editor Nan Froman as well as the Groundwood team. This is certainly a dream come true.

There's something timeless about pet portraits. They never go out of style and always evoke warmth, laughter, or nostalgia. I cherish mine immensely.
