It has really been a pleasure working on this newsletter. I will be going back to my bimonthly format as my schedule has been quite busy this year. In September, I visited Washington DC where I received an honour for Malaika’s Costume. I have begun teaching again as well as some school, library, and bookstore visits in the upcoming school year. I am also excited to join the Authors Booking Service (ABS) as a presenting author as well as with the Toronto Public Libraries (TPL). I continue to work on my writing projects and there are some announcements in this bulletin with more to come. I hope you enjoy this read.
Sincerely,
Nadia L. Hohn
On Sunday, September 16, 2017, I participated in a live conversation that was streamed across the internet. The A Different Booklist StreamAThon was a fundraiser to help raise $2 million. On this panel, I was one of four storytellers which included Sandra Whiting, Dan Yashinsky, and bookstore co-owner Itah Sadu. There were other local celebrities who participated in the two-day-long fundraiser. This store has a special place in my heart as it is where I first met my publisher, Sheila Barry, of Groundwood Books.
ScholasticCanada is publishing paperback versions of Malaika’s Winter Carnival and Le Carnaval de Malaika. They will both be available in Scholastic Book Clubs this December 2017. My advance copies arrived in September.
5. A Scholarship! A Real Highlight to My Year
I am quite excited to have received a Highlights Foundation Scholarship to attend an upcoming writing workshop. I have been eyeing this workshop for quite awhile so to have a scholarship so that I can attend is truly a blessing. I attended a Highlight writers workshop in 2015 and had an amazing and productive experience. There I also met most of the members of my critique group. I look forward to this upcoming workshop at Highlights.
6. Joining the Authors Booking Service Family
I am also excited and feeling blessed to have been added to the list of presenters with the Authors Booking Service. "This service assists educators and librarians with finding young adult and children's book creators who are qualified and willing to present at schools and libraries." 7. Words of Advice
Why not make your vacation literary! As you travel, take the opportunity to connect with a local literary community such as a chapter of the Society for Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI), book club, visit a bookstore or library, or attend a literary festival, conference or convention. These are the perfect opportunities to network, connect with a local scene, gather helpful information, and get your books and name out there. In the past month alone, I have attended Telling Tales Festival (Hamilton, ON), Kingston Writers Fest (Kingston, ON), and Baltimore Book Festival (Baltimore, MD) not including the writers’ meetings I regularly frequent.
